FIELD BIOLOGY INTERN
PROJECT AREAS
Cactus Wren Research and Monitoring: Groundwork is entering Phase II of a 4-year, Transnet-funded cactus wren restoration effort. Consultant biolgists will conduct protocol coastal cactus wren presence/absence surveys and protocol California gnatcatcher presence/absence surveys within both Encanto and Radio Canyon project areas. During these surveys, AECOM biologists will map nesting sites and territories, record observations of banded birds, and track the nesting success of each breeding pair. Groundwork has a preliminary agreement with current USGS regional cactus wren survey staff that the proposed project will implement required 2012 cactus wren surveys for the Encanto-Radio Canyon population. Therefore, during the Year 1 (2012) protocol cactus wren surveys, AECOM biologists will coordinate survey methods and data with the USGS study needs.
AECOM will provide two wildlife monitoring cameras, which will be installed by Groundwork intern at key locations near cactus wren nests within the Radio Canyon project area to monitor nesting success. The cameras will record nesting behavior valuable to the scientific community and provide an observation opportunity invaluable to the youth and community educational programs associated with the project. Eight artificial nest boxes will be installed in pairs that test the design used by previous researchers against a modified design envisioned for this project.
Wildlife Corridor Monitoring: Develop data collection and monitoring practices to be applied to each restored segment in the watershed.
Invasives Mapping: Develop a watershed approach to invasives control, including initial data report, budgets, and potential funding sources and partners.
DUTIES
- Work with sub-consultant AECOM ornithologists to translate all restoration data to public data site for Best Management Practices
- Assist AECOM restoration biologists in the completion of monthly status reports.
- Work with AECOM and Groundwork restoration experts to develop a five-year cactus wren monitoring plan that will follow the completion of the current Transnet project.
- Represent Groundwork on the regional Cactus Wren Working Group
